Predictions for things that will happen before 2007-01-01 00:00:00 UTC.

Computing

  • Mandriva will cease to exist as a vendor of their own boxed Linux distribution
  • SCO will cease to exist as a vendor of their own UNIX-like operating system
  • All new general purpose computer systems will be dual core or more, but no core will go above 4GHz
  • Virtualisation and server consolidation will be even more the hot topic than it is now
  • Nexenta will fade into nothingness before it ever becomes widely used
  • OpenSolaris will make no significant progress from where it is today
  • The Linux kernel will finally refuse to link closed source modules
  • Nvidia and ATI will not care about that and there will cease to be any Linux support for their graphics cards except for what can be reverse engineered
  • One or more prominent kernel hackers will leave the project due to disagreements over the above
  • Eric Raymond will cease to see the funny side of Everybody Loves Eric Raymond and will make sure John Leach knows about it
  • One or more other major cities or regional governments in Europe will follow the example of Munich and switch to Linux
  • XFree86 will stagnate further and there will be no releases in 2006, except bug and security fixes
