I'm thinking of buying a decent desktop machine for home, since I haven't had one at all for a couple of years (I just use a Thinkpad) and I'm starting to miss some it.

Requirements

Must have

  • Decent CPU that supports hardware virtualisation
  • Decent graphics card that can drive at least two LCDs
  • Two LCDs, as big as I can afford
  • Probably 4G RAM, maybe 8G
  • Two disks, smallest that can be bought (storage is on the fileserver)
  • DVD writer

Would be nice

  • Gigabit network

Ideas

  • Shuttle PCs look good. The only slot I'll need is for a graphics card
  • I'll be using Debian or Ubuntu Linux and I'm told nvidia graphics cards works best at the moment
  • I'm biased towards an AMD CPU at the moment, but not tied to it
  • The Shuttle SX38P2 Pro looks ideal
